HOUSTON BURN INJURY ATTORNEYS
Every year in Houston, there are victims of burn injuries caused by the negligence of others. Defective wiring, household appliances, chemicals, and steam burns are just a few causes of these types of injuries.
There are four levels of burns:
First Degree Burns: This is a burn in which there is redness of the skin but no actual blistering.
Second Degree Burns: These are burns which cause blisters. There are two levels of second degree burns, superficial and deep.
A superficial burn is where the outer dermis is damaged. It causes painful blistering of the outer skin but they will typically heal within a couple of weeks with no visible scarring or need for surgery.
A deep burn involves the deeper epidermis. When a deep burn occurs, it is usually noted blisters or a wound that is white or red in color. Many times a loss of sensation occurs.
Second degree burns can be caused by flames, chemicals, hot liquids and even severe sunburn. Burns caused by heat are thermal burns and those cause by liquids called scalds. If you have a burn that is more than two or three inches in diameter or is on the face, hands, feet, genitals or is caused by an electrical source, you should see a doctor immediately.
Third Degree Burns: These are burns that penetrate all of the skin layers and permanently destroys the skin layers. The wound will be a black or white wound in color. Since the nerve endings are destroyed it will not be painful. Many times these types of burns have to be treated with skin grafts to close the wound as well as functional and cosmetic procedures afterword.
Fourth Degree Burns: These are burns in which the skin is destroyed as well as severe muscle, bone and tendon damage. Many times these burns are caused from severe electrocutions. These burns are especially difficult to treat due to the damage and the prognosis for recovery is often bleak.
The road to recovery can be very long and painful. In severe cases, the initial treatment can run in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. If additional admission and rehabilitation is involved, the costs will go even higher. In addition to the physical scars of burns, the emotional and psychological issues associated with being a burn victim can last a lifetime.
If you have been a victim of a burn injury due to a defective product, accident or job incident that was the fault of someone else, you have the right to seek compensation for medical bills, lost work hours and pain and suffering.
